Antigone as the Daughter of Oedipus

You should look at Antigone as the daughter of Oedipus when reading and analyzing both literary works.

Antigone is a famous literary work written by Sophocles in 441 BC. Basically, Antigone is the antagonist of this well-known play and she is Oedipus daughter. Remember that she is an antagonist because she is in opposition to the main protagonist, Creon, who is the King of Thebes. He wants to kill Antigone for burying her brother, Polyneices, who was killed by another brother because of his treason. He was sentenced to his public humiliation by the refusal of being buried. Antigone loved her brother so that she decides to give him a proper burial, thus breaking the law issued by Creon.

Pay attention to the text of this play to find more proofs that Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus. She thinks that she is a nice person because she always tries to do good things. There are certain verbal proofs that she does her crime out of confidence that she does something wrong because Antigone does what she feels. She is quite strong so that she won’t let others keep her from doing the right thing.

Besides, people in Thebes think that she does what is right so that Antigone doesn’t deserve her future fate and punishment. When it comes to Hemon, he also believes that she is a good person who will be punished wrongfully. She just doesn’t want to leave her dear brother unburied. To understand her character and this play better, you should read Oedipus The King too.

For most readers, it’s hard to resist comparing both plays and their leading characters, Antigone and Oedipus. Keep in mind that both stories provide you with a great opportunity to start making effective comparisons of their selfish pride, ignorance of reality, and other personal traits. These plays include many interesting and distinct differences that shouldn’t be overlooked.

When it comes to Oedipus and his daughter Antigone, they both are loved by people. However, the main difference is that the legacy of Oedipus is due because of those unnatural relationships in the family that he is involved in. At the end of the tragedy, his name becomes quite vain, but Antigone longs for her glory that will be received after dying for her brother. She is a huge threat to Creon because she understands that she has nothing to lose after understanding her future fate. These interesting characters bring about their unique demise. You should read both plays and make your own analyzing to share your ideas about Oedipus and Antigone who is his daughter.
