Movie Version of The Crucible

Arthur Miller is an American playwright and novelist. Miller is distinguished by acute social vision and active civil position. His play The Crucible, which was conceived as a kind of popular historical drama, represents through the prism of artistic vision real events, the trial of the witches in 1692 in Salem, one of the main centers of the fanatical puritanism.

The content of the play is about the vicissitudes of the judicial process of farmer John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth, who became victims of slander of the servant Abigail, who was in love with Proctor. In an atmosphere of religious hysteria John Proctor reveals the moral courage and dignity. The play, which is filled with disputes, clashes viewpoints in the courtroom, was seen as a timely work, as a kind of parabola, which contained a clear allusion to America of early 1950s. One of the best productions of the play has been performed in England by famous Lawrence Olivier.

The play was adapted for a movie as The Crucible in 1957 by Belgian director Raymond Rouleau and in 1996 by Nicholas Hytner, who used Miller’s script.

The film of 1996 recreates the events that took place in Salem, as they are interpreted in the play by Arthur Miller.

Naked young girls, who were caught in the woods near the fire dancing, in order to avoid punishment, stated that have fallen victim to witchcraft and evil spirits. As a result, the servant-slave was found guilty of witchcraft. Soon they start accusing of witchcraft others, based on the testimony of women who claimed to have seen how those were sending spirits. As a result, there are more and more witches appear; and a special court is set, executions of witches started in Salem.

In Miller’s film adaptation the focus is on the relationship of Abigail Williams and John Proctor. Abigail being in love with John deliberately slanders him and his wife, as well as other alleged witches in her own interests, convincing others that she and the rest of girls have become victims of witchcraft. The real social connotation of events, land disputes and difficult economic situation, fades into the background.

The process of witch-hunt in the film looks like farce, in a certain playful way. It seems that it was a joke that suddenly ended in tragedy. Towards the end of the film the events start being dramatic. The trial is shown in the film as an obvious farce as well.

The film has excellent cast, Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, Paul Scofield, and Joan Allen.
