Book Report of the Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye is a novel written in the first person. The main character is a narrator. He is a sixteen year old New York City boy from a respectable family Holden Caulfield. He is looking for his place in the world through constant wanderings and failures. He tells about it on lively and imaginative language of youth slang.

This is a lyrical novel, very small in size, with a weak fable beginning, and with the replacement of external plot with the internal one. All events are uniplanar, centered on the character and focused on him. This is a centripetal story, so typical for the American literature of the 20th century. As we can see, the form introduced in literature in 1920, again entered the artistic usage, as it was in tune with the mood of era that was different, but at the same time crisis for person’s individuality.

At the heart of Salinger’s novel is the principle of compressed time. The story begins when Holden is expelled from another prestigious school, where he was put by his loving parents. As a child he is dragging on meeting with them, and as a grown-up he is trying to live independently. Holden is in no hurry to return home and for three days he is wandering around cold New York, filled with the pre-Christmas rush.

The action of the novel is laid in this short time period, but at the expense of memories and thoughts of the character (about the death of his fourteen-year-old brother Allie, about their older brother, who was a terrific writer until being sold out to Hollywood, about former fellow practitioners and non-folding relationship with the girls, etc.) the whole short Holden’s life is presented here. The atmosphere of the mid-20th century America is also perfectly recreated in the novel.

The experience of independence is chaotic and not very pleasant for the character. He feels unable to find his place in the world and doesn’t see any prospects in finding it. Holden doesn’t like what his usual environment can offer him. It is difficult for him to find a common language with his peers.

Holden wants to be a catcher in the rye. He is only able to properly communicate with children. Holden himself is still in many respects a child, despite his tall height, gray strand, and adult habit of smoking. He doesn’t have child’s integrity and clarity, and its loss is painful for him. He does not want to grow up, and it is also a kind of protest against the surrounding reality, which imposes certain behaviors, stuffs him with surrogates and frightens with a prospect of a new world war.

A happy life of postwar America presented through perception of the teenage character shows instability, vulnerability, and dependence of people in the modern world.
