Great Gatsby a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s

Great Gatsby is one of the best works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, where Fitzgerald brightly showed two properties of his talent – pathos, an emotional intensity of the romantic and sharp even satirical look of the realist. These properties are interwoven in the artistic fabric of the work, creating a colorful and individual image.

The main Fitzgerald’s objective is debunking of the American dream in the novel. This term describes a desire of lightning success and getting rich quickly. Happiness and wealth are identical for the people who profess the postulates of the American Dream.

This myth includes equal capabilities for everybody people regardless of their initial capital and social origin. The name of this dream incarnates the idea that all these things are possible only in one country, America. Fitzgerald argues that a man who put his whole life to get wealth does not become happier from it, but on the contrary, loses its own I, spiritual world and, as a consequence, the desire to live a full life. The author shows the tragedy of a man who all his life aspired to wealth that eventually led to his death.

The narrator in the novel is thirty-year-old Nick Carraway, the son of reputable parents, a graduate of a prestigious university, and a member of the First World War, who in the post-war period came to New York to study banking, although he cherishes the dream about writing. He tells the reader about the adventure that happened two years ago. The main character became a neighbor of the owner of a large palace, an unknown, mysterious and eccentric lonely young man named Jay Gatsby. Nick was an ideal find for Fitzgerald, because he is an educated and open-minded man, ironic and thoughtful, tolerant to both worlds.

Yet Gatsby’s fate is tragic, because this is the fate of a poor. Success, recognition, and celebration of love in the bourgeois world depended on money. But one of the principles of the American dream is uniformity of opportunity for all Americans regardless of financial status. Fitzgerald in the novel criticizes society, which distorts human feelings and relationships, pushes a person to commit a crime, makes the tragedy, if not inevitable, that in any event legitimate.

Great Gatsby is a story about the exemplary American young man. Gatsby fought in the First World War, he is courageous, strong and resistant to many things. To achieve his dream, he without considerations, not using an opportunity to study at Oxford, rather peculiarly fits into reality. Gatsby was able to get rich on bootlegging, an illegal sale of alcohol during the dry law.
