Jimmy Carter - America's 39th President

Jimmy Carter was born in Georgia in 1924, but his real name was James Earl Carter. His father was a manager in a local store before buying a farm so that young Jimmy had to work there, sell peanuts, etc. It’s interesting that he managed to earn a lot of money on buying and selling cotton at the right time. After graduating his high school, he attended the local technology institute, and this is where he got a degree.

Jimmy was on a submarine and promoted his way to a lieutenant. Another interesting fact is that he was chosen by the admiral for a special nuclear submarine program where he took his graduate work in nuclear physics and reaction technology. Keep in mind that Kimmy serves as the senior officer, but when his father died, he decided to return home to take over his farm. He had a lot of money from the sold cotton, and this is what allowed Jimmy to start shelling peanuts so that his family owned and operated a warehouse or a general purpose shop that sold different seeds and supplied special peanut processors.

It’s no wonder he soon became relatively prosperous from his peanut business. He became a leader of a local community fast because he served all kinds of country boards. His political career started in 1962 when he was elected to the state senate of Georgia. In 1977, Jimmy was elected as the 39th president of the US and it’s worth mentioning that he was a great president with a number of accomplishments and brilliant foreign policies.

It’s true that he took his office in the period of considerable optimism and high approval ratings. He symbolized his personal commitment to this type of leadership in his inaugural speech. Basically, his key domestic priority was the energy policy. The main reason is that oil prices were rising, but Carter believed that it’s important to cure his country of its dependence on foreign oil supplies, especially in the aftermath of the oil embargo in 1973.

As a president, he succeeded in reducing the foreign oil consumption by 8% and developed big emergency stores of natural gas and oil. However, the Iranian Revolution increased oil prices in 1979, and this is what led to long lines of people at all gas stations, thus destroying some of major Carter’s political achievements.

When it comes to his foreign policy, it was centered on a promise to make basic human rights the main concern in the relations of the US with other countries. That’s why he suspended military and economic aid to such countries as Nicaragua, El Salvador, Chile, etc.
