The Jazz Age, The Roaring Twenties: the era of groundbreaking changes

The Roaring Twenties are known as the period of rapid changes in the cultural and social life of the USA. With the introduction of new technologies to many industries and everyday life, various businesses soared great profits, as a result, the wages grew high and average Americans got the opportunity to consume more goods and services. Economic boom triggered the outbreak of popular culture that quickly filled the life of many Americans with the sense of freedom, self-love and rebellious attitude to the older generations. American people began to spend more time on family, entertainment, sport, and other comforts. Many households got enough energy to power new and updated electrical devices, among which was the radio. It is the radio receivers that brought jazz to the masses.

The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and published in 1925 initiated the rage to jazz, new dances, musicals and completely new view on life. The Roaring Twenties is the time closely associated with jazz culture. F. Scott Fitzgerald called this period The Jazz Age. Originated in black communities jazz was slowly capturing the north through loud radio speakers. New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz, the music that was rather improvised than played with printed scores. Since first performed by Afro-American bands at the beginning of 1900’s syncopated rhythms gained wide popularity in the twenties. Originally called the music of devil, it sweepingly broke into dance halls, venues and restaurants.

The youth that rejected the traditional way of life was the first to show wild devotion to jazz. Along with new music preferences, the rebellious behavior of the young generation was manifested in fashion, manners and dances. Thus, such new dancing styles as the jitterbug, the Black Bottom, and the Charleston appeared. Scandalous, inappropriate and outrageous these dances spurted into popularity in almost every American pavilion. Despite absolute resistance at the very beginning, very soon nearly all Americans gave their heart to jazz. They loved dancing to jazz, listened to it on the radio or played it on the phonographs. New York and Chicago became centers of jazz where black musicians were shaking the foundations of the Old America. The roaring twenties were the Renaissance time for Afro-Americans and the jazz in its turn forged them ahead towards freedom and black identity.
