Being an Effective Teacher

A new report by Sutton Trust shows evidence of successful teaching methods.

The question of how to become an effective teacher has always been a matter of debate. Such an approach creates a lot of problems, because there is simply no universal recipe for the success of the teacher because different approaches work only for certain teachers and in certain classes of students.

Sutton Trust found that such popular training methods in education, as excessive praise and encouragement of pupils or an opportunity to give them to discover the key of knowledge, does not really provide high positive results.

The report, prepared on the basis of study of more than two hundred volumes of research results, provides at least six major permanent components of teaching effectiveness. And one of the most important ones is a good knowledge of the subject by a teacher.

This may seem obvious, but the report shows that the best teachers possess a deeper knowledge of the subject, and if they are below a certain level, this significantly reduces the impact of the training of students.

The report also states that praise may be harmful to students. The praise is primarily designed to reassure a student, but at the same time it can actually transfer low expectations of a teacher to a student.

Effective teaching has a huge impact on the achievements of poor students, while the correctly organized assessment is the basis for effective learning. This approach includes giving children sufficient time to enable them to improve the received new knowledge and skills, that is, the teacher must teach gradually.

Determination of the effectiveness is not simple, but the report acknowledges that students’ progress is the yardstick, by which the teacher’s performance can be evaluated.

The nature of the reasons why teachers use certain forms and methods of teaching in the classroom and are hoping to achieve positive results influences students’ academic performance.

The other important thing for the effectiveness of a teacher is relationships between a teacher and students. This position can also seem quite obvious. The report clearly says that the mechanisms of interaction of a teacher with students have a great impact on the learning process, as well as creates a certain atmosphere in the classroom.

The survey has also showed that more than 90% of teachers believe that children learn better when they receive educational information in the learning style preferred by them.

Professional behavior of a teacher, including the support of colleagues and the ability to talk with parents, also has a rather moderate impact on the effective learning process.
