Love Poem, Written by Robert Herrick

Robert Herrick is also ranked among so called poets-cavaliers. His poetic style is really close to these poets, though on the whole, his work does not fit into the narrow confines of court art. Herrick’s book of poems Hesperides appeared in 1648 and had a clearly polemical sense.

In the 17th century love lyrics Herrick contributed his own special mood. As a rare exception, the poet writes about happy love. This love does not look like an all-consuming passion of character Donn. Hesperides don’t have a manly elegance of Johnson or mocking cynicism of poets-cavaliers. Herrick puts several of his beloved in the book. According to the style of the era, they have names taken from the Roman poets. But it is difficult to distinguish them one from another- they all merge into a single, slightly blurred image of delicate and charming woman who is not so much a living person as the epitome of beauty, softness character and devotion.

The poet looks at the relationship of his character with the lover as if from outside, without approaching too close, and giving erotica a little sentimental character. The author of Hesperides is drawn by even and soft light of the feeling, rather reminiscent of the dream of love than its reality.

In one of his love poems, Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May, Herrick uses a number of passages from ancient poetry (Catullus, Horace, and others), where the motif of catch the moment evolves. But, in addition, Herrick refers to the Gospel, playing with the parable of the wise and foolish virgins.

In this poem, Herrick tells women to get married while they are still young and beautiful. He says that beauty doesn’t stay long, once time passes by a girl gets old and the beauty is gone. In the poem, Herrick uses two interesting symbols – flower and the sun. The flower symbolizes a woman at her peak of beauty. As other poets, Herrick uses this feminine object to describe the beauty of a woman. When flowers get old they lose their freshness and beauty. It is a good symbol for youth because it is full of life while it is blooming. As the flower sits showing the beauty to the world time goes by quickly. Over time it starts to decay, as a woman starts getting wrinkles. In a while, a once beautiful flower is not appealing anymore. The same happens with a woman – while she is young she looks attractive, but soon age catches up and she becomes unattractive.

The sun in the poem symbolizes time. It rises every day to start a new day and a new start. The sun reaches its prime at noon, like a woman reaches her prime, when she is the most beautiful.
