William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience

William Blake was a popular mystic, poet, radical thinker, artist, and had many other talents. Basically, he worked at the time of great political and social changes so that all of his works explore the tension that exists between different human passions and repressive nature of political and social conventions.

There are many readers who are interested in his Songs of Innocence and Experience because it’s the most famous collection of Blake’s poems. This is where he investigates 2 contrary states of people’s souls, and this literary work is also called visual. Keep in mind that William also invented a completely new way of designing and printing his work in reverse with metal and varnish plates that were etched with an acid to design relief printing surfaces. They are mostly printed in brown inks, and all prints were colored manually. The most interesting fact is that only a small number of their copies were made, and they were sold to collectors and good friends privately.

Are his Songs of Innocence and Experience targeted at children? Remember that Blake claimed that kids could understand his works, just like adults. However, this comment is about their understanding of things directly and with no clouded perceptions because they derive only in the adult life. There are other questions that should be answered in terms of this famous literary work.

How does it relate to any previous literature? It reflects the forms and rhythms of those ballads and kids’ poetry that were popular in the 18th century, but Blake always wanted to avoid any dogmatic morality in his works. That’s why many of his poems included in this famous collection contain unsettling ambiguities. Think about his spiritual visions because they underlie his mature writing style and include his personal reactions to well-known philosophers, such as Swedenborg.

What are his poems about? They include many simple patterns, images, rhythms, and others, but you should understand that they are argumentative, troubling, and satirical. The main reason is that they all reflect Blake’s spiritual experiences and political beliefs. Take into account his vision that embraces such radical subjects as child labor, abuse, poverty, and others because they all are reflected in his poems too. This collection dramatized the naive fears and hopes of children while tracing their transformation into adults.

William Blake was a popular mystic, poet, radical thinker, artist, and had many other talents.
