The Digital World of Bill Gates

The very figure of Bill Gates, the birth and rise of Microsoft has already become a legend. The story of how a Harvard dropout student became the richest man in the world still captures the imagination of many people.

If we try to compare the situation in the digital world in 1975, when Bill Gates and Paul Allen created Microsoft, with what is happening today, it might seem that we are looking down from the dizzying heights and hardly can understand what was happening back then.

In 1975, there was no Apple, as Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak registered their company only in 1976. Microcomputers seemed an exotic and expensive toy. One of the first computers was the Altair 8800, a microcomputer developed by MITS.

Bill Gates’s famous activity is directly connected with the Altair 8800. When Gates and Allen were still students, they learned about the Altair 8800 and offered to write Basic language interpreter for it. And they were lucky. During the testing, Basic turned out to be perfect without any errors. MITS adopted the program and the company Microsoft was created.

The real foundation of the company happened in 1981, when IBM decided to release its personal computer. IBM offered Microsoft to develop a new Basic for its computer. Gates accepted the challenge. He bought the system 86-DOS (QDOS) from the company Seattle Computer Products and started the implementation. As a result, MS-DOS appeared and became the property of Microsoft.

Microsoft continued to capture the world market by releasing Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Through the company Corbis, which was part of Microsoft, Bill Gates has received a huge photo-card file of Batman and other photographers. Photos were used for dispatch in electronic form.

In 1986, Microsoft’s shares were sold on the stock exchange for the first time and Bill Gates overnight became incredibly rich. Many gigabytes turned into billions of dollars. He has become a billionaire when he was only thirty-one.

Gates’s strategy reminds a strategy of Napoleon – first start the battle and then we will see how it goes. Gates felt that the pace of development is more important than reliability. His success is also due to the fact that his users were not programmers, but office staff, whose behavior can be predictable: they use about 5-10% of the program’s features, so you can take the risk.

In 2001, a new operating system of Microsoft – Windows XP came to the market, which has pleased users and is by far one the most massive operating systems in the world. By the end of 2006 the number of sold copies of Windows XP counted 538 million.

The very figure of Bill Gates, the birth and rise of Microsoft has already become a legend. The story of how a Harvard dropout student became the richest man in the world still captures the imagination of many people.
