Miriam Book Report

Truman Capote is a classic of American literature. Besides the well-known Breakfasts at Tiffany, he is also the author of the cult novel On a Cold Heart, and many journalistic works and numerous short stories.

The first remarkable work of the author is a story called Miriam, for which Capote received O. Henry Prize.

Miriam was published in 1945 in the journal Mademoiselle by the editor Margaret Smith, who was the sister of the famous writer Carson McCullers. Carson McCullers set the tone in the Southern Gothic prose and early work Capote belongs to this movement.

The Gothic movement in literature appeared in the South of the USA in the 19th century. This is a line of decadence. Works of this genre have a lot of talking about individual mental disorders, some grotesque and mystical perversions that happen to a person in the background of precariousness and insecurity in reality.

Works of southern gothic are characterized by motifs of alienation and madness; there also have to be elements of folklore. Character always bears the mark of the curse of guilt, punishment, or mystery. This can be a killer, a crazy man who fell to the bottom for different reasons, both internal and external. Also this prose has concepts of innocence and temptation. Truman Capote uses temptation in his story Miriam.

The action in the novella takes place in New York. The main character lives near the East River in Manhattan. This is a unique case when we talk about southern gothic school in the context of geography of New York.

In the Bible, Miriam is Moses’s elder sister, who saved him. So name Miriam means saving and changing lives. Also, according to the Jewish Midrash, Miriam helps her mother during childbirth since being five years old. In this case, the name means bringing something new to the world. This theme will also be presented in Capote’s story. The main motive of Miriam is duality.

This is a story about an elderly woman Miriam, who is 61. Her life is measured; nothing beautiful happens in her life. Once she decides to go to the cinema, where she meets a strange girl of 10-11 years old, but with a very long and almost grey hair. The girl asks Miriam to buy her ticket to the movie, and thus the story begins.

The girl’s name is also Miriam and she begins to importunately visit the old lady. There are two interpretations of this duality in the story. This can be an actual dualization of older Miriam. Miriam’s double is a little girl; she represents all those things of individuality that older woman suppressed for a long time. Eventually, hallucination comes to her and takes away the identity. She becomes mad.

Another interpretation is that Miriam can be a harbinger, an angel of death.
