History of Israel : nationhood origins

God called Abram and promised him a new homeland for him and all his descendants. Abram got a new name Abraham, which was given to him by God. The name is viewed as “father of many nations”. Somewhere about 2000 BC Abraham and his wife Sarah went to Canaan. The history of the Jews, the nation to have struggled from plenty of prosecution and oppressions, begins with Abraham’s name. It is fair to assume that the very origins of Israel keep the mystery of these long-suffering people.

The first point to track the nation’s infanthood is to learn about Jewish forefathers as long as the origins of landmarks and personal names.

In the course of history, Aaronites have received several alternative names: Israelites, Hebrews and Jews. The name 'Jew' comes from the Kingdom of Judah, named after the eldest son of Jacob. At the Roman times, it was called Judea. One of the many views on the word 'Hebrew' is that it was first mentioned in the Bible to describe the ancestors of Abraham in Eber's line. The son of Abraham Isaac and his wife Rebekah gave birth to Jacob. Once in his dream, he wrestled with an angel and God gave him a new name Israel. That is how the Promised Land inhabitants were called thereafter. Jacob had 12 sons whose descendants, later on, formed 12 tribes. The capital of Israel was established by David the son of the first Israel king.

As mentioned above, the history of Israel began when God said that he would give Abraham the land flowing with honey and milk. Indeed, Canaan was fruitful and Edenic-like even more so compared to today’s Israeli home. No doubt, the area amidmost the footprint of Asia, Africa and Europe was a tasty morsel for every more or less powerful state. Within the time being the land of 12 tribes was absorbed into Assyrian Empire. After the Babylonian conquest, they had to migrate to Persian lands. They were conquered by Alexander the Great and ruled by his successors. The Jewish religion had to survive exterminating attacks of various tyrants including Egyptian pharaohs, Julius Caesar and Hitler.

God kept the promise and Abraham’s descendants finally have stepped onto their land. There is still no explicit answer why this nation was exposed to so many disparagements. Probably, it is so due to the sense of having been chosen by God or due to the fact that they started out in the “Cradle of Civilization”. No one knows for sure, but the evidence is clear that the Jews are among the few to have undergone a lengthy sacrificing way to freedom.
