Stigmata’ Fact or Fiction

Starting from the Middle Ages in the history it is possible to find cases of painful bleeding wounds on the body of some of the followers of Christ.

These sores appear on areas of the body where they were on Christ during his crucifixion (hands, feet, head, and upper quadrant). Neither science nor religion, neither the carriers of such wounds can give an answer to the question of how and why they appear.

The word ‘stigmata’ is literally translated from Greek as a wound. Over the past 800 years, there were 406 cases of these wounds, but the Catholic Church recognized only 60 of them. There are even statistics on this mysterious phenomenon. For example, it is estimated that 68% of people wearing the stigmata are Catholic. Interestingly, the majority of cases occur in the Mediterranean region, but today it happens also among Koreans, the Japanese, the Canadians and Argentines. 90% of stigmata carriers are women.

During the crucifixion Christ had four wounds: through the hands and feet, a wound on the right side of the spear of the centurion, scratches on his forehead from a crown of thorns, the wounds on the back of scourging and mark on the shoulder from the heavy cross that he carried. These wounds are reproduced on the body of a stigmata carrier.

The wounds are always unexpected. It is said that the greatest number of cases fall on Good Friday. Doctors are still unable to find a way of treating the stigmata and determine the nature of their origin.

It is hard to say when the first stigmata appeared, because the evidence of them could simply not reach our days. One of the recent cases is Theresa Newman born in 1898. She was a very weak child. She was the bearer of the five stigmata: on the palms, on the side and on the forehead. Every time Friday came she was losing up to 1.5 liters of blood and up to 3.5 kilograms of weight. But by Sunday the stigmata disappeared without a trace from her body.

The Vatican always carefully examines cases of stigmata on the human body, involving doctors and priests.

Medical science has own two points of view. First, the stigmata are of hysterical and neurotic character. Even though, few people can make their intact skin bleed, there are cases when under the influence of hypnosis, some people can cry tears of blood. The second one is that the stigmata are imitation. In this case, the patient can use the drugs or chemicals that prevent blood clotting. They intentionally inflict self-injuries, which don’t cease to bleed.
