The Works of Philosopher Carl Rogers

When it comes to the philosophical world, there are many areas that were influenced by the French existentialism movement in the 20th century, including uprising humanistic psychology. Basically, Carl Rogers played an important role in this kind of new concept. As a philosopher, his contributions consisted of his practice of client-centered therapy and ideas of self-actualization. They all have quite strong existentialist connections.

Think about interesting relationships between prominent existentialists and Carl Rogers, but you should remember that he wasn’t an existentialist philosopher. However, he managed to incorporate interesting existentialist ideas and themes into his personal contributions to the so-called humanistic psychology movement.

To get a better understanding of his important ideas, it’s necessary to briefly examine the history of his life too. Keep in mind that this well-known philosopher was born in Chicago in 1902. He lived in quite a religious and strict household where the entire family was significant. Rogers had a few friends while growing and in the college, but he didn’t stray a lot from his religious foundations. At the very beginning, he planned his life as being a minister, but he became interested in different psychological studies until he started to work with abused kids. This is where Rogers managed to form the key fundamentals of his unique ideas about client-centered therapy and the self. The good news is that he continued to study these ideas in his career.

When evaluating his place in the existentialist history, you need to realize how Rogers imagined or viewed himself. He called himself an existentialist by the nature and believed that he discovered a number of important ideas through his research, cooperation with patients, and their personal quest for self-actualization. Rogers always said that this option was better than just trying to think like other existentialists.

Finally, when comparing European and American existentialism types, he related himself more to the positivism of the second one, but he was still connected with some Europeans. His ideas are quite clear in his work and major contributions in terms of the humanistic psychology movement. Rogers was one of the forerunners because he came up with a range of unique theories and ideas that helped to develop this area, including his therapy.
