The Story the Green Knight

The poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight refers to the works of the so-called Arthurian since it tells about the adventures of Gawain, a knight of the Round Table, and the nephew of the legendary King Arthur.

The story begins in Camelot during the New Year celebrations, when King Arthur distributes gifts. In the midst of the fun the Green Knight comes with an ax and offers a bet. He asks someone to hit him with an ax, provided that after a year and a day he will inflict retaliation. Gawain, the youngest of Arthur’s knights, and his nephew, accepts the challenge and chops off his head, but the Green Knight puts it back and reminds Gawain about the meeting at the Green Chapel and leaves.

A year later, Gawain goes to look for the Green Chapel and finds the Lord Bertilak’s Castle and get an offer to stay.

The next day Bertilak and Gawain make a deal: Bertilak will give Gawain everything he will get during the hunt of the day in exchange for whatever Gawain will make during that day. When Bertilak leaves, his wife tries to seduce Gawain, but all she could get was a kiss. In the evening, Bertilak gives Gawain deer, and he in response gives him a kiss. The next day, the Bertilak gives him a boar and Gawain returns him two kisses. On the third day the Lady Bertilak gives Gawain a green silk belt, which protects against any physical damage, and three kisses. In the evening, Gawain gives Gawain only three kisses in exchange for the fox, but leaves the belt to himself.

On the appointed day, Gawain goes to the Green Chapel, where the Green Knight swings his ax twice at Gawain, but both times were stopped. On the third day, the Green Knight’s hit leaves a small scar on Gawain’s neck. The Knight then reveals his identity – he is Lord Bertilak, and explains that all manipulations were carried by sorceress Morgana, the evil sister of Arthur. Knights become friends. Gawain returns to Camelot, wearing a green belt, in a sign of shame and unfulfilled promises. Knights of the Round Table are also obliged to tie green belt as a reminder of Gawain’s adventures.

The studies of the Green Knight’s image were carried out by many specialists. It could be a variation of the Green man, a mythological being associated with nature in the works of medieval art, a Christian symbol or a devil. Lewis, who studied the Middle Ages, said that the character was as bright and concrete, as any other literary image. Tolkien said that the Green Knight was the most difficult character in the poem. The main function of the Green knight in Arthurian literature is to try and test the knights, so it is terrifying, mysterious, and friendly character at the same time.
