Jonathan Swift - Humor, Satire and Irony

For many readers, it’s not a secret that satire, irony, and humor are important elements of literature, but they all have different origins. Authors use them for different purposes and in different ways because literary works have a variety of modes. Each one evokes different senses of fun and pleasure of readers.

When it comes to satire, you should understand that it’s a general term that reflects weakness and implies certain corrective purposes or moral judgement. If you’re interested in the books of Johnathan Swift, you should understand that his satire is targeted at people’s bestiality and pettiness. His sarcasm and irony indicate the mockery of someone or something, and this pattern is clear in many of his literary works.

Pay attention to such stories written by Swift as Gulliver’s Travels and A Modest Proposal, as this is where humor, irony, and satire are used as important and effective writing tools. For example, irony is used by the author to involve readers and force them to see moral and deep problems. That’s why he creates satire and irony. If you want to compare these famous books, ensure that you have a clear idea of how the author uses humor, satire, and irony in them to focus on the problems that exist in the society and comments on them without totally and openly addressing the audience. However, the use of these important tools differs from one story to another.

If you like A Modest Proposal, you should notice that the main figure of speech used by Swift is his verbal irony, as this is how he says the opposite of what he really means. His masterly use of this writing took allows him to make the main argument or a statement that Irish people deserve a better treatment from the English government. His proposal to Ireland that concerns growing and selling small babies for clothes and food is quite irrational and barbaric, but this is how the author succeeds to manipulate readers to accept his important ideas as rational and intelligent.

Swift also use effective satire throughout this book. He is both callous and sympathetic when using different stats and facts to create certain effects and back up major arguments. In conclusion, his satire is well-developed because he believes that there is a severe epidemic in Ireland by stating that people have many financial issues so that kids are only an extra grievance. Gulliver’s Travels is another interesting story where Swift uses satire and irony to impress readers.

For many readers, it’s not a secret that satire, irony, and humor are important elements of literature, but they all have different origins.
