The Swimmer by John Cheever

The Swimmer is a modern literary masterpiece written by John Cheever, and it addresses a number of important themes, including losing friends, family, respect, and possessions while being obsessed with specific pleasurable hobbies. This is how the author shows the targeted audience how the main character experiences major losses in his life only because he is obsessed with swimming. Keep in mind that Cheever uses myths and symbols in a very talented way.

Basically, the central message of this book is that people’s total immersion in their single goals may lead to ignoring other life treasures that enrich them. This well-known short story is inspired by the oral narrative so that it portends a mythical realm. It’s quite creative because this plot is informed by a myth with a few meanings of the society, and this factor makes this book touch the psychic world.

There are many famous literary critics who lauded John Cheever for the articulate use of both surrealism and realism, as this is what let him capture the key thematic explorations of American suburbs. Don’t forget about relationships or connections between wealth and happiness because they are also elevated via the author’s use of myths and symbols. He provides readers with an interesting description of the futility of achieving goals without any clear focus.

Neddy is the main character of The Swimmer who starts swimming across the pool, but there is a storm that clearly indicates that something goes wrong. He is a man in his middle ages, but he still wants to stay young, and this conclusion is easy to make based on his attitude. Neddy thinks that he is quite a vibrant person who can’t swim at home. He becomes obsessed with swimming in affluent pools until he finds a dry pool in suburbs.

While waiting for a storm to end, he suddenly starts feeling disillusioned and tried with his idea of swimming. He is determined to go on, but he doesn’t feel any excitement at all. Neddy becomes upset when he finds another dry pool, and the whole story finished when he comes back home and keeps wondering why his house is deserted and locked. He is surprised to find out that his family is not here and he wonders where they all are gone.

Finally, you should know that the author used his personal experiences when writing this story because he attended one private academy that he couldn’t graduate because of expulsion. That’s why he decided to start his writing career.
