Days of conservative values have passed; communications with a father with excessive respect and constant apologies are out of fashion. Most of the families have established liberal relationships. But still there are families, in which social status and sexual identity plays a huge role. And often in such families, behind the apparent mutual respect, terrible complexes and mental problems are hiding.
So-called honor killings are possible only when the values of the family are so conservative and contradictions within the family are so severe that death becomes the punishment for a dissident member of the family. This reflects a relationship, in which the principles of the family are above the lives of individual family members. Honor killing even happen in Western countries due to the merger of Western and Eastern world.
Women in these cases are usually the victims. They are killed for refusing to get married, relationship that are not approved by parents, having sex outside of marriage, wearing inappropriate clothes, and even a sexual assault in their direction, in which they simply cannot be guilty. According to international estimates, every year up to 20,000 of such murders occur, although it is believed that there are many more of such cases, because most of them are not reported.
Some of honor killings are committed because of the mere anger of one of the senior members of the family. Other family members often close their eyes to this crime to save the reputation and social status of the remaining family members.
And even worse, that in certain countries these kinds of murders are not reported to the masses, because they have become the norm. Honor killings even happen in the USA, where Western values are dominated.
In a report published by the US Department of Justice at the beginning of this year, it was reported that in the United States, 23-27 honor killings occur each year. The report also says that at the moment four types of violence are the most common ones, like forced marriage, domestic violence, honor killings and female circumcision.
One of such honor killings happened to Sandy Kenval, who being a 19-year-old girl traveled from America to Pakistan to marry her cousin, who was twice her age. After a separate residence, six years later, in 2008, she filed for divorce. But her very conservative father, Pakistani immigrant, could not endure the thought of divorce. At night, he strangled his daughter with a cord. Police said that he tried to prevent a shame his daughter’s divorce would bring to his family, apparently ignoring the shame of him being sent to prison for the murder.
