A Comparison of Poets

Three prominent English poets: John Donne, John Milton, and William Wordsworth belong to different cultural and historical eras and different artistic and literary movements; despite the fact that Donne and Milton both lived in the 17th century.

Donn belonged to the transitional stage of the late Renaissance. He was one of the founders of the English mannerism. Milton’s works are associated with the Baroque style. Wordsworth is the most distant from his predecessors in temporary frames. He gained fame as one of the founders of English Romanticism. The significance of poetic achievements of these three poets has been so fundamental, if not decisive, for the whole British and world literature, that their personal models could affect the course of the creative evolution of subsequent ages.

Wordsworth wrote his poems under the influence of the French Revolution. His collection Lyrical Ballads caused a genuine revolution in the literature of the time. In poetic ballads, poet introduces the spoken language of the peasants and the north-west of England, essentially producing a genuine reform of the literary language of the time. Wordsworth’s characters are ordinary people, members of the lower classes. It truly depicts the ruin of millions of small farmers and the suffering of the poor. However, Wordsworth is true to Puritan religious dogmas. He preaches the doctrine of the Church of non-resistance to evil. Aesthetic views of the poet played a historic role in the development of Romanticism in Britain and the United States.

The crisis of the Renaissance outlook and the growing influence of religion on artistic creativity emerged with particular acuteness in the works of the outstanding poet John Donne and in the works of poets in a literary school led by him – metaphysical poetry. The name of this school arose from the fact that in the works of its members, Renaissance, direct, active image of life was replaced with the intellectual, philosophical reflection on the problems of life, death, and immortality. Donne’s works were a bright artistic expression of the dramatic transition from the humanism of the Renaissance to the theological concept of the world, the religious outlook of the 17th century, from the Renaissance to the Baroque realism.

The main feature of Milton’s works is a combination of cheerful motives, colorful Renaissance poetry with Puritan seriousness and didactics. In Puritanism, he is attracted by preaching of asceticism, spiritual strength, and criticism of promiscuity of the court and royal tyranny.
