The Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871

The Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 was a major response to escalating the civil unrest in addition to the Joint Select Committee report during the so-called Period of Reconstruction of the US. Basically, they were established to control and dismantle the practices and actions of the Ku Klux Klan because they had threatened the lives and economic and politic rights of those slaves who were newly-freed. There were many people who considered it as a terrorist organization because its members murdered, assaulted, and intimidated white Republicans and freedmen.

This act was designed to suppress the activities of this organization in those regions where it was targeted at. However, it was short lived, though it was only the beginning of freedmen and women working with the US government. The main motivation for passing this act in 1871 was connected with the events that happened in this country at the end of its Civil War.

The slavery was abolished so that a large number of slaves were free. This is what resulted in a huge uproar in the South because many states relied mainly on the work of freed slaves. There were many efforts to limit their rights because some states passed their discriminatory laws known as Black Codes. They were targeted at controlling the movements, activities, and works of freed slaves. It’s no wonder their lives became regulated so that most of them were put in the position that made them legal slaves. Many African Americans who thought that they were free ended up working for their former masters and limited from enjoying their freedoms because of these laws.

Congress passed a few important civil rights acts in response to such unfair decisions made by southern states and their Black Codes. They were focused on eliminating those limitations and offered an answer to the discriminatory actions taken in such states. These acts also guaranteed that no states could issue laws to limit the immunities and privileges of US citizens or deny their equal protection so that they offered effective solutions to those problems that most African Americans had at that time.

Many southern states refused to ratify these laws so that Congress started their radical military reconstruction. This is what resulted in many stories and events brought to the public eye and related to the brutal treatments of former slaves, including the attacks made by specific hate groups called the Ku Klux Klan that needed to be stopped.

The Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 was a major response to escalating the civil unrest in addition to the Joint Select Committee report during the so-called Period of Reconstruction of the US.
