Discussing Savages At Hand

The Lord of the Flies is a famous novel written by William Golding, and this is where the author explores the theme of civilization versus savagery. The story tells readers about some boys who are stranded on one isolated island after the imaginary nuclear war. This is where you can see a conflict between 2 major characters, Ralph and Jack, and they represent savagery and civilization. Their conflict also has an impact on other boys in this novel because they delve further into their savagery.

This interesting theme is introduced to readers through the symbol of a conch shell associated with Ralph because he is the first boy who uses it and becomes a leader of others. Basically, this is what symbolizes his authority and leadership among boys on the island, but it also suggests civilization because he allows every boy to have an equal word and opinion. If boys have a conch, they will be given a unique chance to speak and share their opinion with others, regardless of their age and position. It’s clear that they want this island to be democratic and show a civilized side simply because they want to mimic their homes.

Pay attention to the symbol of the beast because is contrasts with a conch. It’s associated with Jack because he starts devil worshipping it in the end. It begins as some snake thing, but then it becomes the Lord of the Flies. This beast symbolized a clear evil, and don’t forget that many people considered snakes as bad omens. At the very beginning, this symbol is just a thing, but it keeps growing so that it finally manifests the most ultimate and powerful evil. The beast also has quite a strong status over the flies, but boys think that it will lead them to behave like savages because they start acting based on their fears while being led by Jack. This group of boys clearly demonstrates the main theme of savagery.

One of the most effective ways used by the author to show a conflict between civilization and savagery is when Jack and other boys need to kill their first pig. This action suggests savagery because they start being aggressive and violent, but the worst thing is that boys don’t really care about that. This conclusion is easy to make if you focus on the word choice of William Golding. It proves that boys don’t feel guilty and become true savages in this story. This conflict develops further and is reflected through the violence between 2 groups of boys on the island so that nearly all of them become savages.
