Love that Defied Society

The Events in Shakespeare’s tragedy take place in the Italian city of Verona, although the problematics of the work are associated with British reality. The long-standing feud of two noble families – the Montagues and Capulets – becomes an obstacle to the happiness of two young people, Romeo and Juliet, who loved each other. The tragedy claims that origin and identity of the person are not important, exposing the remnants of feudalism. When Juliet learns that the man she loved is an enemy of her family, she says that no matter how you name the object it won’t lose its qualities.

Love of one’s choice is opposed to medieval marriage of convenience and pushes Romeo and Juliet, the people of the Renaissance, to heroic deeds. Their love knows no bounds, the tragedy is sung with a feeling of a great poetic power. Romeo and Juliet are teenagers, their characters are being formed, and the playwright shows these changes under the influence of love and their experience. Just as Juliet’s love turns her into an independent and heroic woman, Romeo’s love turns him into a man.

Love of Romeo and Juliet is bright, clean and self-sacrificing. It has flourished in the days of feudal enmity. Under the circumstances it was a challenge to the whole of society, without exaggeration, it can even be called heroic. Families of Montagues and Capulets were bitter enemies. Generation after generation took part in the fight, when suddenly the very nature of their descendants gave an unexpected miracle: two of them met and fell in love. Then all the conventions, old morality, and danger became unimportant. This is what the real love is. This is where its victorious force hides.

Love to Juliet lit Romeo’s life and made him a brave and strong man. The rapid rise of feelings and the youthful passion bring the flowering of a human. In his love, full of the joy of victory and sense of foreboding, Romeo appears active and energetic. He courageously takes the message of the death of Juliet. He realizes that life without her is impossible with such determination and valor.

For Juliet love has become a deed. She heroically fights against her father’s feudal morality and defies the laws of blood revenge. Juliet’s courage and wisdom have manifested in the fact that she was above the age-old rivalries of the two families. When falling in love with Romeo, Juliet rejects cruel conventions of social traditions. Respect and love of a man for her is more important than all the hallowed traditions and rules.

Both Romeo and Juliet decide that love is more valuable than life. Life is not worth anything if they cannot be together.
