Tensions Before the Civil War

American Civil War that lasted from 1861 until 1865 is the war between the North abolitionist states and 11 slave states of the South.

In the first half of the 19th century, there were two systems in the United States – slavery in the south and capitalism in the north. These were two completely different socio-economic systems coexisting in the same country. The situation was aggravated by the fact that despite the steady increase in population and the growth of economic development, the United States was a federal country. Each state lived its own political and economic life; integration processes were slow. Thus, the South, where slavery and agrarian economic system was common, and the industrial North spun off into two separate economic regions.

Entrepreneurs and the bulk of the emigrants sought to go to the North the United States. This region had enterprises of mechanical engineering, metalworking, and light industry. There were enough workers here, the demographic situation was stable, and standard of living was adequate. Quite the opposite was the situation in the South. Planters settled here and received huge land holdings. That is why, in contrast to the North South became an agrarian region. However, the South had one big problem: not enough workers. Emigrants went to the North, therefore since 17th, slaves were brought from Africa. By the beginning of secession, 1/4 of the white population of the South was the slave-owners.

In the North, there was a flexible tax policy, the money from the state budget was allocated to charity, the government was trying to improve the living conditions of the black population. However, conservative South didn’t do anything for the emancipation of women and equation of blacks with the rights of white people.

The most important event in the US history in the second half of the 19th century was a civil war, which was the result of irreconcilable contradiction between wage labor system, entrenched in the north, and the system of slavery in the South. The crisis in relations between North and South, deepening over several decades, has intensified in the 1850s and was given solved in the Civil War.

This situation has developed because of the fact that in due time the London shareholders, owning the controlling stakes in plantations in the southern states, demanded the South to focus solely on growing the most profitable crops. Planters owned slaves, but they were owned by the North.

The existence of slavery in the South, and its absence in the North was a main reason for hostility, ending in a war that lasted four years.
