At first world society learned about a new powerful and dangerous weapon in 1945. That year the United States used their nuclear weapon twice – in Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was a very scary example of the nuclear weapon use and fortunately – still the last example. Those days’ people understood that if the real nuclear war will be it will be the last war for people – no one will survive in it.
However, when the Cold War started, both sides (the US and the Western democracies from the one side and the USSR and the Warsaw pact countries from another side) understood that the nuclear weapon is the perfect way to push on the opponent psychologically. That is why the nuclear arms race continued until eighties. First nuclear weapon was developed to resist the axis powers (at that moment only one of them was still fighting – Japan). After the Second World War opponents have changed. The Cold War was the opposite of the World War. In that war was no real use of weapons, but the information war reached unprecedented heights. The culture of fear helped states to manipulate people. In the United States was even a movement among many families to build special shelters for protection against nuclear attacks. These air-raid shelters were developed to cover people in years. Theoretically they were able to help people wait a nuclear winter.
One of the very scary moments in the history of the Cold War and the nuclear arms race was the Cuban Missile Crisis. It started when the USSR decided to place their ballistic missiles in Cuba. When American state and the President Kennedy got the information about this situation, the world became very close to the nuclear war. Fortunately, due to the diplomacy that crisis was avoided. In the last year of the nuclear arms race the amount of nuclear weapons was really huge. For example, it was more than two thousand launchers, eleven thousand warheads and more than four thousand megatons of nuclear substances in the United States. These numbers increased a lot comparing to 1962 year. In the USSR there were two and a half thousand launcher, ten thousand warheads and more than eight thousand megatons in 1982 year. The nuclear arms race is the example of how human anger and fear can lead to bad things. At the same time, this is the example of the triumph of diplomacy.
