Ancient Roman Entertainment

Many Roman citizens had a lot of free time, because they had their slaves to work for them. Archaeological excavations, studies of mosaics, paintings and works of Roman writers help us learn how the Ancient Romans spent their free time.

There were three types of public entertainment: theater performances, chariot races and gladiator fights and baiting with wild animals. Initially, these entertainments were entertaining the public all day. However, in the age of empire, each of them took place separately, often in a specially constructed building.

Public gardens and parks were popular places for recreation and entertainment. The Romans were also doing running, javelin and wrestling.

Romans had a lot of theatrical performances, which were very different from one another. The most popular were Fescennini. During Fescennini, the choir was divided into two parts, and these halves exchanged a variety of taunts and jokes with each other. Romans also enjoyed visiting saturs, theaters where comedies and plays about domestic life were shown. In addition to the actors’ play, music and dancing played an important role in theatrical performances.

The Romans, like the Greeks, were very fond of attending racecourses, which held chariot racing. Rich people competed in chariot racings, as they could at their own expense contain stables and thoroughbred horses. Such competitions had a betting, when viewers placed bets on the upcoming races. The winners received monetary compensation, while illustrious charioteers were celebrated as the Olympic champions.

The most favorite spectacle in ancient Rome was gladiatorial fights. On the amphitheater stage trained gladiators fought each other. Very often, these fights ended in the death of men, but that did not stop the desire of viewers who wanted to see bloody spectacles. Many famous gladiators became darlings of the audience.

Ancient Roman terms were also a place, where Romans came to relax and enjoy life. Everything contributed to it: perfect indoor climate, diversity of terms, and a gradual transition from low to high temperatures and vice versa.

Baths epitomized the luxury of the Roman Empire. Pools and beds were made of marble, the walls and floors lined with mosaics, washstands were made of natural stone or precious metals – gold and silver. Despite the luxury of the Roman baths, the entrance fee was quite democratic. Both rich and poor people came to terms. Baths blurred the boundaries of social strata and allowed to communicate on an equal footing.
