Prejudice in To Kill a Mockingbird

The setting of To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee is set in Alabama in the 30s. The main theme of this story is about the form of prejudice in addition to race, gender, and age classification of people based on their social status. It’s true that prejudice is well explored in this famous book, especially when it comes to racism issues.

In the 30s, black people were discriminated and their life was quite hard because of high poverty levels. The author uses different characters to expose all prejudice forms and show readers how they correspond with the story line of the entire novel.

People’s age is a minor form of prejudice. For example, Scout considers that Atticus is old and can’t play around with them any longer, while Jem thinks that he’s old and tired to play football. Scout also compares his age to the parents of his friends who are quite young. Scout and Jem think that their father is boring because he doesn’t want to do what other parents like doing. He doesn’t fish, play poker, hunt, and do other things. Keep in mind that this kind of prejudice takes place not only between the characters of Atticus, Scout, and Jem, but it also happens between Scout and Jem because he wants Scout to go and play with others and leave him alone because she seems too young to him.

Besides, Jem is prejudiced to Scout also about her gender because he wants her to act like a girl instead of following him all the time. It’s obvious that he influences her in different ways because he is her older brother. That’s why Scout may act a bit boyish so that she is often criticized by Aunt Alexandra. Gender prejudice is revealed bot only among the relatives of Scout, but it also exists around the whole town.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a great novel written by Harper Lee and it looks deeply into the strengths and faults of human beings. It explores how different forms of prejudice can influence the perspectives of people and become real barriers to their mutual understanding. This book can broaden reader’s view of existing prejudice and teach certain lessons about the society.

Finally, the character of Scout is used by the author to show readers social, racial, and gender prejudice forms displayed by town inhabitants. Harper Lee explores all of these aspects via the first person narration and specific symbolism, and she did it in a talented manner. Read To Kill a Mockingbird to get a better idea of this theme because it’s still vital these days.
