An Intimate View of Celie's Oppression

The US has undergone a number of important hardships since 1910. For example, the Great Depression took place and left many people without their regular job and income, proper necessities and even food. Don’t forget about WWI and a flow of many foreigners into this country.

When it comes to the south, racial tension was the main problem. There was some emersion of African American culture, but you should take into account the major issues that existed, including segregation, Jim Crow laws, Ku Klux Klan, etc. Sexism was another major problem faced by the society of that time. The main reason is that most people believed that wives were owned by their spouses so that they had to follow certain rules and obey.

Think about the Color Purple written by Alice Walker and Celie, the main character of this book. She is an African American woman with some wealth, but she is not important because of the color of her skin. Celie has to face a number of sexual and racial hardships in this novel, but they only make her feel and be stronger.

The way she was treated as a kid is the first example of sexism. Her father kept raping her and made her pregnant after the death of her mother. This is what proves that her father saw Celie only as the object, but not a human being with emotions and rights. If this accident would happen these days, it wouldn’t go unnoticed so that any man would bear quite harsh consequences.

Celie is given by her father to Albert without any prior consent. He claims that she is better than Nettie because she knows how to clean, cook, and take care of kids. That’s why Albert takes her without any love or affection under one important condition that she will become his property willing to take care of children and his land. It’s a true example of absolute sexism. Readers should realize that the character of Celie highlights the most detrimental effects of silence on women.

People are silenced when they don’t have any right to shape their personal experiences. This means that they can’t make any life choices so that they are just the products of their current environment. Celie emphasizes the silencing of all black women caused by male relatives, including their spouses and fathers. They are also used as tools to perpetuate silencing. As an example, her stepfather silence Celie through isolation and abusing. This novel can be hard to read because it’s full of tragedy and reality of that time. There are many obstacles that she needs to overcome in her life.
