The Buddha’s Meditative Position

In meditation, the purpose of the body is to serve as a support to the mind and allow it to focus. Therefore, the ideal posture for meditation is the one, in which you can indefinitely remain completely still and relaxed and at the same time be full of energy.

Since the mind has to be attentive all the time, it is better to keep your body in a vertical position when meditating: if you lie down, you can doze off. Thus you need to choose the position, in which your body would function with the least expenditure of energy, heart would beat as calmly as possible, and lungs would let you breathe in and out freely.

If you sit in a position that makes it possible for you not to feel stressed and keeps you energized, it usually generates a feeling of internal energy, which is very helpful to focus. Such a sequence – from relaxation and vitality to the vitality and concentration – is the basic principle of a posture for meditation.

If necessary, you can meditate in almost any position. It is even possible to meditate while walking. But usually for deep concentration it is best to choose a sitting position.

If you sit down, so that the body weight is evenly distributed in the vertical plane, you’ll need the minimal muscular effort to support it. If hands and feet are symmetrically balanced, the stress, distracting from meditation, will be minimal.

Sitting properly doesn’t mean to take a rigid, fixed position and maintain it indefinitely: it is necessary to keep the body awareness and understand the principles of correct posture for meditation.

When you are sitting, the main support for the entire body is hips. In order for the hips to completely take over the weight of the upper part of the body and to keep the balance at the same time, you need to keep your back not too hunched back and not too arched.

The entire weight of the upper part of the body is concentrated in the buttocks. The weight should be distributed evenly between the buttocks, so that the muscles on either side of the back and neck could receive the same load and not overstress.

It is usually recommended to sit for long periods of time for meditation. To achieve jhana, or more or less steady concentration of the mind, the body needs to be in the most stationary posture to allow the mind to calm down, because the slightest movement or rocking may hinder the attainment of the desired state.
