Troy and Cory Maxson's Tough Love

Troy Maxson from August Wilson’s Fences appears to be a noble personage with a tragic flaw, leading him towards a devastating personal ruin. When Troy spoils Cory’s chance to gain a football scholarship, Troy did it being assured that whites wouldn’t allow his son to play. Though the world changed in the radical way, he stubbornly didn’t want to believe.

By the way, we should stress that Troy Maxson isn’t a bad guy at all. Perhaps, most readers might find his speech and actions callous and cruel enough, but on the other hand, Troy also boasts likeable and admirable personal qualities. As a provider, Troy’s firmly responsible in his duty towards the family. Moreover, Troy’s passionate and funny and everybody likes to listen to his stories, because as a story teller he boasts a unique hypnotic effect on his listeners. He was definitely good at taking care of his family, but this personal quality was masked by his tough exterior. Unfortunately, his family learnt this only after his death.

All the people around do their best to persuade Troy and the world has changed and Cory has a real chance to make his dream come true. Rose, Troy’s wife tell his husband that a great number of colored boys are playing football now, so Cory can do the same, as times have changed. Of course, Troy Maxson could only dream about this in his boyhood. Cory keep naming current black baseball players to his dad, such as Hank Aaron. Unfortunately, Troy Maxson simply ignores his son’s speech and argues that the white people won’t get Cory nowhere with this football anyway. Cory blames his dad of doing it just out of resentment. The son adds that Troy simply doesn’t want him to become better than he. However, the son’s speech has no effect on Troy. He’s just assured that he ought to protect his son from the whites, pain and disappointment. His sincere desire to protect his kid makes him blind.

This Troy’s complexity also manifests from the good as well as admirable qualities of his tough personality. In spite of the fact, Troy Maxson keeps to the wrong course in an attempt to help his son, it’s quite apparent that he does it just to protect his kid. Perhaps, it makes sense for psychologists to trace back Troy’s tough relationship with this dad. Indeed, Troy despised his dad, who didn’t show any love to the boy, but kept his family thanks to a strong sense of responsibility and it engraved into Troy’s character. Troy’s dad also worked hard to support his family, but he was unable to express love to the family members. Troy just shared this personal quality with his father.
