Little Woman, Small World Themes and Characters

Little Women is a story written by Louisa May Alcott, and this is when she incorporated her personal experiences and emotions. For example, the character of Jo is quite a close replication of the author, and this is what makes this well-known novel more personal and interesting to the audience because the author is speaking directly through her protagonist.

Basically, this novel is written from the third person and a limited point of view. Its plot is focused mainly on Josephine or Jo March who develops different characters throughout the entire story perfectly, especially when it comes to the March girls. It’s true that all sisters or little women in the small world are unique, but they all are tightly connected to each other through their love.

The plot of Little Women takes place during the Civil War, and this family lives in poverty with their father who is in the war. Keep in mind that female characters include Jo, Beth, Meg, and Amy, and they all learn to be thankful and grateful in different life circumstances while helping others who are less fortunate through their hardships.

These girls are quite hopeful and they all dream about a better future for themselves. Each of them experiences interesting adventures and pursues unique dreams. They are still gathered as one family in the end, and little women are grateful for their blessings. As you already know, Jo March is the main protagonist in this book, and she is a tomboy who refused to submit to the custom image of ladyhood. This kind of mindset is quite different from the one of typical women of that time.

Besides, Josephine has her initiate passion for literature and writing, but she loses a lot of her independent nature after getting married to Professor Bhaer. She gives up writing because he is a big critic of her style while readers are exposed to different sides of her character. Jo remains fiery, rebellious, and outspoken while wishing to be a man who fights in the war together with a father. She does her best to keep her family together and she becomes quite upset when Amy and Meg got married.

Josephine starts assuming that a male role of being a father can have different ways, but her flaws still make her a lovable character. You will love the sheer humanity of this little woman in the small world created by Louisa May Alcott. Find out more about each sister and develop your own opinion on them after reading this famous book.
