The classical Chinese theater developed during the Yuan dynasty

In the Yuan era Chinese theater had many developers. It was the time when zaju (specific Chinese histrionics, drama) was born and started to grow. Zaju is the opposite to the "Nanxi" drama; it was born in the middle of the thirteen century in the north of the Celestial Empire. The biggest growth of the zaju was in during the reign of the Yuan Dynasty. In those times this kind of the histrionics got its name. Since those times zaju had many changes and continues in many modern theaters; one of the most famous of them is the Beijing drama.

It is interesting fact that all other theatric directions in China are named in the name of China province or region. Only zaju is the exception, because it is also called the Yuan drama. Yuan dynasty was the first dynasty in China that was opened to theater. Due to the Confucian ideology theater was ignored for a long time before Yuan dynasty came to power. This Mongol dynasty was always interested in theater and even extended the shadow theater during their campaigns.

The name zaju means ‘mixed theater’. Chinese people started to call some of the theaters this way long time before the real zaju was born. There are four or five acts in the Yuan drama. Every act has its own arias cycle made in one pitch. Each cycle has its own rhythm and rhyme and usually sung by only one singer. Other characters during the act usually don’t sing, only read monologues or sometimes have dialogues. Between acts some actors can read funny stories or sing comic songs. Four great playwrights of the Yuan are Pu Bo, Ma Zhiyuan, Guan Hanqing and Zheng Guangji. The most popular artworks of the Yuan dynasty are Autumn in the Han Palace, Orphan of Zhao kind and West wing.

The Yuan drama is a very original direction of Art. It was born in the middle of the thirteen century and had its biggest growth during the Yuan Dynasty period. This is the only direction of theater in China that is called in the name of dynasty. Other theaters’ directions are usually called by a region or a province. That is why this direction of Chinese theater puts itself on a step above the other direction, which is more local usually. Yuan drama, or zaju, has many followers. One of such followers is the Beijing drama that nowadays is also well known in different countries, not only in China. For this interesting art direction we all should thank the Yuan dynasty that was always a big fan of all theaters.
