Story on Talking Animals

Talking animals are the magic animals found in myths, legends, fairy tales, fantasy, and science fiction. They may look like ordinary animals or in an anthropomorphic form. The plot of stories with talking animals can take place among people or in the animal world.

Talking animals are often found in myths and legends, where they basically act as liminal beings, i.e., designating certain limit, which a hero has to overcome.

Gods and spirits were often depicted in the form of animals in traditional religions, for example, the spider god Anansi in Akan.

Talking animals are often present in fairy tales and stories about animals in the cultures of all the peoples of the world.

Since Aesop, talking animals are the protagonists of fables in which they are used for the manifestation of human qualities. Fables usually don’t pay attention to the actual characteristics of animals, instead such stereotypes as a sly cat, treacherous snake, and silly donkey and others are used. Fables with animals were popular in the western medieval literature, when kings and noblemen were depicted as animals.

Animal Farm by George Orwell is among more recent works, where animals are used as a satire and allegory on the people. In the story, animals on the farm revolt against the owner, but the society formed by them soon turns into a totalitarian. With the means of talking animals, human society is metaphorically depicted, which helps people to look at themselves from the outside.

Stories about talking animals are a fairly popular genre of literary fairy tales and fantasy works, mostly for children. In some of them talking animals are displayed as biologically reliable and do not perform any actions that would have been impossible for them otherwise. This brings these stories close with realistic works about animals. The world, in which they live, is real, thus such stories often end tragically.

In other stories, animals are able to perform actions that are not possible for them in reality. They talk to each other or people, using usual speech, or through telepathy. In a number of stories talking animals look like normal. In these works, they usually live in the world with people, often not showing them their ability to speech.

In the works about anthropomorphic animals, characters in addition to the ability to think and speak, dress and behave like people, live in houses, use household items, have their own states, fight, and so on. In such stories, action usually takes place in a fictional world, in which the animals are no longer perceived as pets, but as human-like creatures.
