Philosphy on Emotions

Emotions are a mental process of impulsive regulation of behavior based on sensory reflection of the importance of external factors, and generalized reaction of the body to such exposure. Emotions regulate mental activity not through specifics, but through corresponding general mental states, affecting the flow of psychic processes.

In humans, emotions generate feelings of pleasure, displeasure, fear, timidity, and so on, which play a role of orienting subjective signals. The simplest emotional processes are expressed in the organic, motor and secretory changes and belong to the innate reactions. However, in the development emotions lose their direct instinctual basis, acquire difficult character, form various types of so-called higher emotional processes (feelings); social, intellectual and aesthetic, which are main content of emotional life for humans.

Even the so-called lower emotions (feelings of hunger, thirst, fear, etc.) are a human product of socio-historical development, the result of transformation of their instinctive, biological forms, on the one hand, and formation of new types of emotions - on the other hand. This also applies to emotional and expressive, mimic and pantomimic movements, which when in the process of communication between people, become largely conditional, signal and social character, which explains cultural differences in facial expressions and emotional gestures. Therefore, emotions and the emotional expressive human gestures are not vestigial phenomena of the mind, but the product of positive development. They carry out in the regulation of activities, including cognitive, a necessary and important role.

Emotional processes include affects, actual emotions and feelings.

Emotions happen because of the following: relationship of the subject with the environment that cause emotion (perception following the stimulation, which is derived from the selective receptor activity or sensory organ); perception of the environment primarily orienting on the reflex (spontaneous perception, or the activity inherent in the receiving system); individual processes that can cause emotions (memory, imagination, figurative and anticipatory thinking, proprioceptive impulses from the pantomimic or other motor activity, endocrine activity that effects the nervous and muscular emotion mechanism).

Emotions can be expressed in the form of expressive movements, in the form of emotional action, in the form of statements about emotional states, and in the form of a specific relationship to the environment.
