Hip-Hop Historical Origins

It’s not a secret that hip-hop as a cultural movement obtained its incredible popularity in the 80s. Basically, it’s all about the musical style that incorporates rhythmic and rhyming speech, and this is what became one of the most influential and lasting art forms in the musical industry.

Pay attention to the origins of this cultural movement and keep in mind that most people consider it as a synonym of rap music, but it refers to a more complex culture that consists of a few important elements, including rapping, deejaying, graffiti painting, and B-boying or hip-hop dancing. Who did this movement originate?

Remember that hip-hop originated South Bronx, a predominantly African American and depressed area in NY in the late 70s. As this kind of movement starts at the society’s margins, its key origins are surrounded by enigmas, secrets, and myths. When it comes to break dancing and graffiti, these are the aspects that caught a lot of public attention at first, but they had the least lasting effect.

The graffiti movement started in 1972 by one Greek American teenager who signed the walls in a local subway system. There are many youngsters in Brooklyn, Queens, and Bronx who were hidden in train yards in the darkness to paint graffiti renderings and different images. It’s no wonder many influential art dealers in Europe, Japan, and America decided to display graffiti arts in major galleries. However, local authorities responded with barbed-wire fences, dogs, and other similar methods that didn’t make graffiti painters happy.

The beginning of other hip-hop components, including rapping, dancing, and deejaying, were connected with each other by their shared environment where they evolved. One of the first major deejays was a young immigrant who introduced the great sound systems of native Jamaica to local parties. He used 2 turntables to meld percussive elements from his older records with well-known dance songs, thus creating an ongoing flow of hip-hop music. Besides, there were other hip-hop deejays, including Grandmaster Flash who isolated and extended break beats. This is how break dancing evolved from improvisational dancing.

Finally, deejays developed their new techniques for effective turntable manipulation, including needle dropping, sliding records, scratching, etc. The origins of hip-hop were also influenced by many hipster-jive styles, black power poetry, Jamaican style, rapping sections, and others.

It’s not a secret that hip-hop as a cultural movement obtained its incredible popularity in the 80s. Basically, it’s all about the musical style that incorporates rhythmic and rhyming speech, and this is what became one of the most influential and lasting art forms in the musical industry.
