The American Indians

Indians is the common name of the indigenous population of America. The name arose from misunderstanding of the first European explorers, who thought they discovered the Atlantic lands of India. According to anthropological type, Indians belong to Americanoid race. The total approximate number of Indians in the United States is more than 30 million people. Language granularity of Indians is very big. Religious beliefs of the Indians in the past were various tribal cults (shamanism, cult of personal patron spirits, vestiges of totemism, etc.). These cults are still preserved only in tribes living in remote and inaccessible areas of America, but the majority of Indians embraced Christianity.

Indians of North America are seen as one of the most exciting races. Anthropologists are still arguing about their origin, pushing many of the most incredible versions. The most interesting is that each of these theories has the full right to existence and is secured by various archaeological finds. The Indians are considered the largest ethnic community in the world, which once formed a state of their own.

According to genetic studies at University of Michigan, the ancestors of modern Indians and Eskimos migrated to America from North-East Asia via the so-called Bering Bridge, an ancient wide isthmus between America and Asia, where now the Bering Strait is. The level of culture of the first settlers corresponded to Paleolithic and Mesolithic cultures of the Old World. Resettlement of Indians on both continents and the development of new lands lasted thousands of years.

Prior to European colonization, most of the tribes of North and South America were at various stages of the communal-tribal system: some were dominated by maternal race, while others formed a paternal clan. Indians of Central and South America (Aztecs, Mayans, Incas) were already living in class societies.

The fate of all Indian tribes deserves a separate discussion. Despite almost 500 years of colonization and brutal struggle for survival, Native Americans still managed to preserve the basic and the most important customs of their ancestors. Of course, not all tribes have survived to this day, however, The Union of the North American Indians is still one of the largest organizations for the protection of indigenous ethnic groups. Only thanks to this and similar organizations the studies of Indian culture and their many traditions were made possible.
