British Imperialism and the Crisis in the Sudan

The crisis unfolding in Sudan (in its Darfur region) is one of the biggest humanitarian catastrophes in the modern world. According to the statistics, a large number of local people were killed and almost 2 million people of them had to leave their houses and relocate to neighboring countries.

It’s important to explore the crisis in Sudan, civil war, and genocide that takes place in this country because they will have lasting effects on its future. To get important answers, it’s necessary to find out more about the history of European colonialism on this continent, including British imperialism. You should try to understand how the occupation of England of this country provided it with the foundation and framework of modern problems. Another important task is to explore the implications and possible consequences that genocide in Sudan will have in the entire international political life.

The US extended its sanctions on Sudan to maintain its economic and political isolation. The main goal that should be achieved in breaking this country into smaller pieces while denying the crucial energy resources of China, which is the main trade partner of Sudan. Its southern part is the creation of British imperialism, and it broke away 5 years ago. However, imperialists don’t want this part to collapse fully so that it’s decided to keep it as a thorn in Sudan.

Don’t forget about a continuous civil war since the independence of this country in 1956, and it origins back to its colonial occupation of Britain and its deliberate strategy of dividing and ruling. That’s because southern and northern parts were governed as 2 separate administrations, and the basic purpose of this kind of division was to encourage separate identities. As a result, British imperialists chose to develop the north while ignoring the south.

Keep in mind that Sudan is believed to have the largest unexploited oil reserves in Africa. It’s worth saying that Asian countries, such as China, were the main beneficiaries of the oil exploitation, this building the local industry and infrastructure. Such countries as Britain and France wanted to deny oil supplies to Asian countries so that their local allies started an armed rebellion in Darfur, and it ended with a civil war with multiple victims. Some of them died because of malnutrition, diseases, and starvation, while others were killed by both sides involved.
