The charming times of conservatism in the USA

The United States had a good time in the 1950s. That’s what many people think, and not only those who lived during that period. In the 1950s, after the World War II, a new sobering era began in America. It crawled into the living room of every American family via the radio and TV. Notwithstanding social uncertainty, production and industry in the USA hit new heights. Assembly lines kept producing high quality goods such as cars or toasters. All of this became must-have attributes of the middle class families. The 1950s brought a long-awaited stability, and not only it.

Music

In the 1950s swing music was still popular, though another music genre arose and it changed the entire world. Sure, we’re talking about rock-n-roll music. Syncopated, loud beats made rock very easy to dance and the US teens of that time went crazy over it. Such outstanding rock-n-roll artists as Chuck Berry or Elvis Presley were typical representatives of radio music of that time. We should stress that the parents of that young generation usually didn’t accept the new music genre and some even considered it to be dangerous for their kids. The older generation mostly appreciated blues and jazz.

Fashion

For girls, short, bouncy curls dubbed poodle cuts became a widespread style of those years. Ponytails became a powerful trend among teenage girls. As for clothing, it tended to be a little conservative, featuring dresses and skirts with synched in waists. Any kinds of shoes came with heels, which were a must-have element in those times. Apart from that, girls couldn’t imagine their lives without poodle skirts. Sweaters firstly arose early in the decade and by the end of it, everybody had a sweater. Both girls and boys of the 1950s appreciated converse shoes. As for ear piercing, it kicked in during the 1950s. Vibrant, bright lipsticks in a variety of shades of red and pink became popular with girls. In the 1950s, it was a common thing for girls to wear jeans, while many parents didn’t appreciate this trend. Hair dye kits were widely utilized during the 1950s. They boasted a great number of colors, including bright orange. Moles were made hot by Marilyn Monroe, so many girls were used to drawing on fake beauty marks.

As for men, their clothing remained mostly conservative, including grey suits, plaid jackets and polo shirts. Jeans were mostly worn by working men, involved in manual labor, though a bit later it became a common fashion.
