Critical Thinking of Dr. Gabor Mate

Dr. Gabor Mate is known in Canada by his work with people with very strong addictions. He works in Vancouver in the controversial center Insite, where addicts are offered clean needles and syringes, medical assistance is given, and a safe space for the use of drugs is provided.

The Canadian government tried to shut down the clinic, but the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that this attempt is contrary to human rights, as the program showed a good result in saving lives. In his book, Mate shows his attitude to addicts, based on compassion. In this case, the number of supporters of this position in the world is growing.

According to Mate, addiction is a behavior a person cannot give up, associated with addiction to anything and a temporary relief as a result of this, as well as with long-term negative consequences for the body of doing such practices. Addiction is absolutely any behavior based on craving with negative effects that a person cannot control. You can depend on anything. In any act or behavior the same substances the same circuits of the brain, reward system, psychological dynamics and spiritual emptiness are involved. People simply switch from one to another.

Mate says that we live in a society, which always selects the fastest methods of relaxation, immediate gratification or the possibility of distraction. In other words, we live in a culture that is economically and psychologically cannot support people. As a result, it is very difficult for this society to deal with drug addiction.

As for Mate, people in power are also addicts. They are addictive to the wealth and power. When Mate tried to understand the addiction to power, he looked at some of the most influential people in history: Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Hitler, Genghis Khan, and Stalin. And he saw an interesting fact: physically they were very small people; they all came from other nations, not from the local population. Stalin was Georgian, not Russian; Napoleon was Corsican, not French; Alexander the Great was not Greek, and Hitler was Austrian, not German.

Thus, they could have been feeling insecurity and inferiority. They needed the power to feel good and to exalt. And to get this power, they were willing to fight and kill many people in order to get that power.

Mate’s ability to use critical thinking to explain the main problems in the world stands him out of his peers. By using the critical thinking he learns on his failures and missteps; he improves himself.
