Relationships are complicated. One day you wake you thinking you could spend the rest of your days with this one person and another day you are considering moving to Brazil and changing your name so she can never find you. The truth it, ditching a girlfriend has much more to do with than just you being selfish. Any healthy relationships require mutual understanding and if you seem to not find any consensuses with you partner, maybe it’s time to get out.
Once you have made a decision, you need to carefully think through the plan of how to ditch your girlfriend so you don’t hurt her feelings yet achieve the result of cutting all the ties. By following the steps written above, you can do both in the easiest way possible.
First, find the right time for a conversation. For example, ask her out on a special date or just talk to her at home while both of you are relaxed enough. The worst thing you can do is break up with her on official events like birthdays or luncheons where there are a lot of people around and the situation requires you to be formal and in a good mood.
Secondly, prepare your arguments. Surely, if you have decided to break up, there have to be solid reasons for it. If you don’t have any, maybe you are just a selfish blockhead and there is nothing wrong with your girlfriend. Make sure you have all the facts laid out and they all are reasonable and objective. Don’t bring up your own pet peeves here and don’t get personal in offending her—in fact, don’t offend her at all. Do not use cliche phrases and simply be honest with her. What you want to do here is to show that your relationship is not healthy for any of you and that you better to split up for the good.
Last, but definitely not least, be nice and sympathetic. Surely, there is nothing nice about breaking up at the first place. Of course, you will hurt her, and no thousands of smiles of yours can heal it. Yet, it is always great to make sure that you are at least not breaking up on a negative tone. However, try to make it clear that there is no chance of getting back together (unless there is) as you being overly nice could give her an idea that the bridges are not yet burnt.
If you follow all the steps above, you are more likely to get out of this ugly situation in the best way possible. For avoiding needing to break up with someone, think before you get into a relationship. Give it some time, and make sure to find the right person.
