Weaving Christian and Pagan Beliefs In Beowulf

It’s true that all societies were based on religious beliefs in one way or another. That’s because they influenced different government types, laws, political parties, and other important areas. When it comes to the Angelo-Saxons, they had different forms of government based on religions, just like others. However, there were 2 main religions, Paganism and Christianity.

Are you familiar with Beowulf? It’s a famous epic poem that describes the governments that are based on the religious beliefs of both citizens and leaders. This story displays their differences and similarities in terms of Paganism and Christianity.

Keep in mind that the government before the time of Beowulf was based on specific pagan beliefs. His ancestors formulated this kind of governments under Paganism, and this idea is backed by their key rituals. For example, when Beowulf’s father dies, his burial ceremony reflects pagan rituals.

This epic poem serves as a perfect example of the convergence of pagan and Christian beliefs though its references to the gods of both religions. Sometimes, these beliefs seem to blend, and there are different illustrations that show that both religions appear from each other distinctly.

First of all, Beowulf embodies a number of Christian elements, including references to Cain. Think about the evil of Gendel because it offsets the good sides of Beowulf. God protects his throne, and this kind of protection displays beliefs in a single God. Another important thing is that it shows the presence of God in people’s everyday life. If you research other examples taken from this story, you will understand that Beowulf was Christian.

This story also contains a number of ancient Anglo-Saxon pagan doctrines, and this fact is hard to deny. As an example, when Gendel attacks Herot, people decide to revert to their ancient pagan beliefs. This is what shows that they don’t have a firm Christian base so that it’s easy for them to be swayed in their religious beliefs. One magic sword was used to kill the mother of Gendel, and it also proves people’s beliefs in magic and pagan spirits that are outside of Christianity. It seems that they are easily overturned by obstacles in their lives. Finally, an interesting blend of pagan and Christian beliefs are well-expressed throughout the whole poem. Beowulf shows a pagan outlook of death after his strong Christian beliefs in other parts of this story.
