Nora's Decision to Leave in A Doll's House

Nora is the protagonist in A Doll’s House, the problem play written by Ibsen. She makes a decision to leave her kids and husband to be free from her marriage and the main reason is that it’s marked by the domination of her spouse. She wanted to get the education necessary to be independent, establish her unique identity, and develop a sense of being an individual.

At the beginning of this play, we find the main character as the passive recipient of any treatment. Unfortunately, her husband keeps trying to impose his cruel will on her and she must behave only as he wants. This means that Nora can’t eat the food she likes or spend money as she wants because her husband, Helmer, treats her as a personal property so that she has no sense of her individuality.

Before getting married, she was controlled by a father, so she moves as gestures by the norms of the patriarchal society. Nora is considered as a childbearing machine who must stay within the 4 walls of her house. Her only identity is determined by her spouse and his social status, and she has nothing to be proud of as a personality. Pay attention to the adjectives used by her husband to address her, including a skylark and squirrel.

Basically, Nora is just an object to exist just to make her spouse pleased. She must follow his whims and dictates, and the fact that she borrows money to treat him is not acceptable to Helmer so that she decides to keep it a secret. That’s why she is haunted by the fear of being exposed. As a result, Nora is threatened to reveal this matter to her spouse by Krogstad if she will fail to act on his behalf, and this is what adds to her mental suffering.

She just hopes that her spouse will come to rescue her and waits for a miracle to happen. However, when the act of her forgery is revealed to Helmer, he comes out in true colors, and it’s one of the biggest turning points in this well-known play because it helps readers see the disillusionment of Nora. When Krogstad takes back his charge via a letter, Helmer feels saved and enacts the whole drama into being a loving husband again, but she already understands who he really is and decides to leave the house to escape from relationships that bring only humiliation and suffering. The main reason is that Nora has no point to keep living with someone who will keep placing his status and dignity above her. His hypocrisies are not hidden from her so that her decision to leave home is not connected with her searches for freedom.
