Damaging Effects of Child Abuse

There have always been families where children had been abused, but until recently the society did not consider this as a serious problem or a cause for concern. But this problem is getting worse each year, and it was officially recognized that this phenomenon is a serious social problem.

The causes of child abuse are a common background of an aggressive society.

Child abuse is the action (or inaction) of parents or persons substituting them, and others, impairing physical or mental health of the child.

There are common forms of child abuse: physical, sexual, psychological violence, and neglect of basic needs of the child.

Physical abuse is the application of physical injuries to the child by parents or persons substituting them that cause damage to a child’s health, development or violate their deprived life.

Sexual violence involves a child with his or her consent or without it in sexual activities with adults.

Psychological (emotional) abuse is intermittent long-term or permanent mental impact of parents (guardians) or other adults on the child, resulting in the formation of his pathological character traits or inhibiting development of the personality.

Neglecting the interests and needs of the child is the lack of basic care of the child, resulting in broken emotional state and a threat to his or her health and development.

The experience of violence, experienced by a child, has immediate and long-term consequences. Immediate effects manifest as symptoms of PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder), while some consequences of violence manifest in the form of persistent violations of the physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and social level.

Physical effects are changes in physical health and child development: delayed physical, speech and motor development, problems with the development of the nervous and other vital systems of the body, etc.

Cognitive effects are changes in the cognitive sphere and the system of the world and oneself, difficulty in concentrating, memory impairment, etc.

The emotional consequences are negative changes in the emotional sphere and in the self-perception. Behavioral effects are stable negative changes in the child’s behavior. Social effects are changes in the child’s ability to build effective social relations.

Studies have shown that many adults who mistreat children were the victims of child abuse themselves. Identification of victims of child abuse and assistance to them is the best way to prevent the spread of violence in the next generation.
