Photosynthesis of Plant Pigments from Light Energy

The sun’s energy is really enormous. Every human clearly realizes this evident truth each time he or she stays for a long time in the sun. That’s so sad that we can’t benefit a lot from solar energy, except producing modest amounts of Vitamin D in our skin.

Unlike human beings, plants appear to be true experts when it comes to capturing light energy in useful forms. For instance, they generate sugars with the help of photosynthesis. The process starts with the absorption of light by corresponding organic molecules, which can be found in the chloroplasts of plant cells. These cells are dubbed pigments. In this particular review we’re going to consider light as a type of energy and we’ll figure out how pigments absorb this energy.

What’s light energy?

Light can be defined as a form of electromagnetic radiation. The given type of energy is used to travelling in waves. However, when talking about light we subconsciously mean exactly its visible spectrum. The truth is that the visible spectrum appears to be the only part of the rich electromagnetic spectrum, which can be seen by our eyes. For our eyes the sun’s light is white, though it consists of multiple wavelengths of light. By the way, in this case wavelengths are colors. Perhaps, you’ve already seen different colors when white light goes through a prism.

Though light as well as other forms of electromagnetic radiation act as waves in most cases, they’re also capable of behaving like particles under certain conditions. Every particle of electromagnetic radiation is a photon. That’s a fixed quantity of energy, crucial for photosynthesis.

Pigments in photosynthesis

Every photosynthetic pigment features a set of wavelength absorbed by it and known as an absorption spectrum. In photosynthesis, the sun’s energy is transformed into chemical energy with the help of photosynthetic organisms. However, not all the wavelengths of sunlight are equally employed in photosynthesis. To be exact, pigments (light-absorbing molecules) are capable of absorbing only specific wavelengths of sunlight. Respectively, other wavelengths are simply reflected. The set of wavelengths absorbed by a certain pigment is dubbed an absorption spectrum.

There three crucial pigments important in photosynthesis. These are chlorophyll b, chlorophyll a and β-carotene. The vast majority of photosynthetic organism boast a wide range of pigments, enabling them to efficiently absorb energy from various wavelengths.
