Youths First Football Practice

Every poem has a message to a reader that is delivered through a tangled web of words. Most poems have a main character or theme which lets the author to speak through them in order to transfer their message across to the readers. In the poem First Practice by Gary Gildner, the author speaks to the reader through Coach Clifford Hill.

At first, Gildner’s poem First Practice looks very short and simple with a straight message, understandable to the reader. In the poem, Gildner leads you to believe that it is all about preparing young men to be fearless for war. There are certain moments in the poem when the author applies militaristic features and words, which again lead you to think the verse in some way must be connected with the military. Although the tone of this verse sounds like a Drill Sargent, it is all about a youths first football practice.

The verse starts with the line: After the doctor checked to see we weren’t ruptured, which looks normal for a poem with such a title. The young child tell the reader how he had to get physical from a physician in order to play football. The second line of the verse throughs a twist at the reader: the man with the short cigar took us under the grade school. That one word cigar burns the word Drill Sargent into the minds of readers. Now when there an army feel in the verse, the poet adds the next line that help to back up the feeling even more: where we went in case of attack or storm.

It looks like the Drill Sargent is taking his new troops to the barracks or underground fight station for the training. The next line in the poem reads: and said, he was Clifford Hill, he was a man who believed dogs ate dogs, he had once killed for his country. This line drawas a clear picture in the minds of readers about what this coach is really like. The name Clifford Hill consists of two words Cliff and Hill. Hill seems like a tough guy seems. This is eproved by the moto he believes in: kill or you are going to be killed. The poet again uses a military subject telling the reader that he had killed for his country before.

The last line about the girls wishing to be present at the base sounds like a normal thing to say at the football practice, which was also a normal thing to say in the military back in 1969.
