The story depicts the transient lives of four folks at the margins of China’s society. An anonymous videographer opens the movie by telling the romantic story between himself and Meimei, employed as a performer at a dive bar, Shanghai. The videographer depicts his love of Meimei, making a living by putting on a blond wig as well as mermaid suit and swimming in a big water tank at the Happy Tavern.
Secondly, the videographer starts to relate the story of Mardar, a motorcycle courier and a small-time crook and Moudan, a rich businessman’s daughter, whom Mardar is hired in order to ferry around town whenever Moudan’s dad takes home one of this mistresses. Then, during one of their encounters on his bike, Moudan and Mardar fall in love. Later Mardar has involved himself in a kidnapping scheme, including Xiao Ho, his former lover as well as Lao B, a criminal. Xiao-Ho and Lao B order Mardar to take Moudan to an abandoned warehouse, while they could share a pickup of the ransom money. The kidnapping goes wrong when Lao B suddenly betrays and then kills Xiao Ho once the money’s in hand.
Mardar, who knew nothing about these developments, tries to move the girl when she wants to know the amount of her ransom. She gets the answer - 450,000 RMB. Being shocked by this low price, the girl screams and then runs away. Moundan jumps right into the Suzhou River. Mardar has failed to catch her on time. By the way, the girl’s body is never found.
After a while, Mardar gets back to Shanghai and resumes his courier career, while still seeking Moundan. Some day at the Happy Tavern he comes across the videographer’s girlfriend, Meimei. He’s assured that she’s Moundan, his lost girlfriend. He watches her in the dressing room. Then he draws Meimei’s attention to his affair with Moundan. Being impressed with his story Meimei takes Mardar to bed. After a while, hanging around in the suburbs, he suddenly stumbles on Moundan. The girl worked in a convenience store. The movie ends with the uncertain death of both Moudan and Mardar. It’s unclear whether it was a suicide or murder.
