Cuban Revolution Analysis

Until the mid-20th century, Cuba was in fact the raw materials appendage of the United States and was completely dependent on US investment.

Using the crisis in the 1930s, army conspirators headed by Fulgencio Batista came to power in Cuba. The coup has caused discontent among progressive-minded youth, the most radical group of which was headed by the young lawyer Fidel Castro.

The day of beginning of the revolution is a public holiday in Cuba. But in fact it was the day of the defeat of the rebels.

On July 26, 1953, 165 people led by Castro attacked the Moncada barracks in Santiago de Cuba. In the battle, some of the enthusiasts were killed, while others were captured by government.

Revolutionaries expected that the population would support their actions. But Castro and his associates failed. They were arrested and convicted. The leader received 15 years in prison.

Castro is known as a consummate orator, whose first speech in court became historical – he was defending himself in the court. In his final statement, he blamed the dictatorship for crimes against the people, and ended his speech with famous phrase – History will justify me.

After the amnesty and emigration to Mexico, the Cuban leader met with the doctor Ernesto Guevara. Argentinian greatly influenced the views of Castro that was the key to the future cooperation with the USSR, which led to confrontation with the United States.

The yacht Granma has become a symbol of the rebel movement. In 1956, the revolutionaries sailed on it from Mexico to Cuba. The boat was heavily overloaded and started to leak. Most of the rebels on the boat died immediately after meeting resistance from government troops. Only two dozen revolutionaries managed to take refuge in the mountains.

By the spring of 1957, the soldiers and commanders of the rebel army grew beards and long hair. Bearded men became their household name. This was a result of difficult living conditions of people. In addition, Castro showed everyone a personal example. Subsequently, the beard became the pride of all those who passed the harsh school of the revolution.

The victory of the revolution in Cuba is celebrated on January, 1. On December 31, 1958, Batista and his officers escaped from the island, and the next day the rebel troops entered Santiago.

The slogan Homeland or Death! became especially popular during the revolution in Cuba in the 1950s, thanks to Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.
