The Life and Work of Frida Kahlo

The whole artistic work of Frida Kahlo was influenced by certain psychological and physical events in her early adulthood and childhood. As an example, it’s worth mentioning a crippling accident and her husband’s infidelity. Her introspective and brooding subject matters also deal with the questions of national identity in addition to personal issues.

Frida had a mixed ancestry, German and Mexican, and this is what provides her with a rich source of subject matters, especially during WWII when she decided to change the spelling of her name to the one less German. Basically, her art works are often called Surrealistic due to a range of disturbing and bizarre themes. Keep in mind that she wasn’t interested in the subjects derived from subconscious minds and dreams, unlike surrealists. That’s because her art works were autobiographic in their sense.

In her later life, Frida was forced to take painkillers, and they definitely affected the quality of her output. She is called a cultural icon and revered in Mexico because of her focus on Mexican identity. There are different key ideas that can be seen in her art works. Kahlo used personal experiences and tragedies, both psychological and physical, and combined them with realistic painting styling. This is what allowed her to produce those images that seemed visually disturbing and emotionally raw. Her main artistic output was dominated by her self-portraits that reflected her artistic suffering.

Her interest in mixed ancestry in conjunction with her husband’s influence means that many of her art works deal with the combined matters of national identity. Don’t overlook the looming presence of her husband who was a talented artist. Frida also played a role of a traditional Mexican wife and woman.

As you already know, she wasn’t an obvious member of Surrealism, but her bizarre and interesting imagery along with her linear painting style remind viewers the art works of Salvador Dali. However, the main difference is that the subject matters of Frida are deeply personal instead of being intellectual or humorous. Finally, she wasn’t fond of biomorphism, automatic writing, and dreams, but all of these aspects characterize Surrealism. Her life was full of tragedies, both personal and physical, and they had a huge impact on her life choices and future art works. Frida Kahlo still remains one of the greatest painters in the world.
