Australias Involvement in World War Two

Despite Australia’s distance from the main theater of hostilities, the country from the first to the last days of World War Two was a party of the events on the side of the Allies. This is due to the fact that the country was a British dominion and was a member of the British Commonwealth. Immediately after the German invasion of Poland on September 3, 1939 Australia declared a war.

By this time, the Australian military forces numbered only 3,000 soldiers in the Army, 80 thousand reservists, two heavy and four light cruisers, five destroyers, four sloops, and 246 aircraft. Immediately after the declaration of war against Germany, the Prime Minister announced the formation of an expeditionary force to send to the aid of allies. In October and November, the 6th Infantry Division, with ancillary units of up to 20 thousand people was formed. In the early 1940s, it was relocated to Egypt where it completed its training and arming with the support of Britain. In addition, in the middle of the same year, three more divisions of the Australian Imperial Forces with auxiliary units were formed. In total by the end of the war the Australian armed forces numbered 993,000 people, which is about the seventh part of the whole population of the country at the time.

Fighting actions of Australia were happening on two separate fronts – against Germany and Italy in North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East and against Japan in the Pacific Ocean. In June 1942, Australia reflected the Japanese attack on Port Moresby (New Guinea), the capture of which would be possible to create a bridgehead for landing in Australia. In July 1943, Australian ships were involved in the operation of the landing of Allied troops in Sicily.

In general, Australian troops have shown a good preparation and courage. According to the Australian Memory of the organization of victims of war during World War Two, the country lost 39,366 soldiers and 735 civilians. During the war, the territory of Australia was attacked by the enemy for the first time in its history (Japanese bombers bombed the north of Australia in 1942-1943).

The war seriously affected the Australian economy, foreign and domestic policy. The need for arms contributed to the development of heavy industry, the industrialization of the country took place at an accelerated pace. Military forces in Australia have seriously increased at the time. Society has become more diverse and cosmopolitan, but in terms of foreign policy has shifted from Britain to the new world leader – the United States.
