History of Islam

Islam was born on the territory of the Arabian peninsula in the early 7th century. In those days, most of the Arabs professed paganism, worshiped various gods, stones, wood, etc. Some Arabs converted to Christianity, others to Judaism, while others were under the influence of Zoroastrianism.

In 570, in Mecca, Muhammad was born. When he was 6 years old, he was left an orphan and lived in the house of his grandfather, and then with the uncle. When Muhammad grew up, he began to engage in trade.

Around 610, Muhammad proclaimed the first verses of the Qur’an. From that time the Prophet began to preach. He urged the countrymen to abandon polytheism and go back to monotheism, to the faith of Ibrahim, Moses, and Jesus, pray, give alms to the needy, fast, feed the orphans, be fair, etc. He argued that the true religion of Arabs is monotheism, the belief in one God. Muhammad said that God sent prophets to people to guide them on the right path. There is no nation, which didn’t have a prophet sent to them from God. He spoke of faith and unbelief, afterlife, heaven and hell, good and evil.

At first, Islam was accepted only by Muhammad himself, his wife and his cousin. Later, they were joined by a rich merchant and about 40 people. The first Muslims were both poor and rich and mostly young. However, during the following years, the number of Muslims was growing, which angered the Meccan aristocracy, which began the oppression of Muslims. As a result, in 621, Muhammad moved to a rich oasis of Yathrib (Medina). Its inhabitants suffered from infighting, and hoped for a fair trial by Muhammad. Soon, Muhammad was able to stop the conflict in Medina, and in 623, began the war against the Meccans, who continued oppression of the Muslims remained in Mecca.

According to legend, Muhammad sent letters to the rulers of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and Byzantium to adopt Islam. All rulers took ambassadors respectfully, but the Iranian king in anger trampled the letter, and some time after he died. By 632, Islam was accepted by almost all the Arab tribes. The same year the Prophet died.

The period from the 6th to the 12th century is considered the golden age of Arab culture. During the first three centuries of appearance of Islam, the basic religious schools formulated their legal, philosophical, ethical provisions, and the differences between them. Literature, art, trade, various sciences, such as chemistry, medicine and geography were developed. There rules of the Arabic language were formulated, dictionaries were compiled, as well as many translations of Greek and Roman philosophers’ works were done in Arabic.
