The Human Immunodeficiency Virus and It's Effects

Most people know that HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus that leads to AIDS. Basically, it’s a sexually transmitted disease that attacks the human system and weakens it considerably. The immune system is quite complex, and its basic responsibility is to fight different infections to keep the body healthy. When people are infected, they are called HIV-positive.

What is AIDS all about? It’s an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome characterized by a range of effects and symptoms that happen together. There are different characteristics and signs that take place when the immune system of people is weakened by this kind of infection.

Doctors use 2 basic ways to diagnose HIV. First, people with HIV can be diagnosed if they contract defining illnesses because healthy people can fight them. When their immune system is weak, these medical conditions may turn out to be serious and put their lives at risk. Second, special screening tests are used to indicate who the immune system of patients are weakened thus making them quite vulnerable to a number of cancers, diseases, and infections.

There is a certain interval between being diagnosed with HIV and AIDS, but it’s quite hard to calculate with any certainty. In general, it takes more than ten years for HIV-positive patients to be diagnosed with AIDS, but this interval is different and it depends on individual factors, including lifestyle habits, immune system power, age, etc. Don’t forget about the effect of improved anti-viral medications taken by ill patients to slow down the spread of this virus in their bodies. This means that they have more time before developing AIDS than in the past. There is no reliable estimate about the average duration of this kind of progression because of the above-mentioned factors.

Finally, HIV and AIDS are associated with a number of negative effects on people’s bodies. The main one is that HIV ruins CD4+ and T cells that are quite important for the immune system because their basic function is to protect the body from most infections and diseases. This means that people become vulnerable to them and can fight even minor ailments. Without any effective treatment, the immune system of patients is badly compromised, thus leaving them open to a number of ailments, including fatal effects. Most of the negative effects are connected with the failure of people’s immune system, but they can be prevented with an early treatment.
